Light-filled foyer

A mirror was an inspired choice to fill an art niche at the far end of the entryway, where it reflects the shoreline view framed by the great room windows. Because it abuts the garage foundation, the wall that extends from the entry to the stairs needed to be built out slightly to accommodate electrical conduits, thus providing an opportunity for the display niches in which this and two other mirrors are mounted. The heart of the home

“What we have is a really big kitchen that happens to have a dining room and a family room in it,” says Jerry. He’s joking, but just a bit: The heart of the house—“the barn”—is a vaulted, 22-by-44-foot great room in which living area, dining area, and kitchen all rub shoulders.
Dividing the great room into smaller zones keeps it from feeling cavernous, says architect Jim Jamieson. “The key is to scale the room so it feels comfortable for a lot of people or a few people,” he notes. The hefty 10x12 collar ties, veneered with the same white oak used on the floors, help by lowering the ceiling visually, as does the dining area chandelier that drops from the cupola. Spaced across the long wall, three sets of 8-foot-tall casement windows—the middle one with a sliding door in the center—offer broad shoreline views. In the living area, two sleek wall-mounted storage benches update a traditional feature: a fireside nook featuring a 72-inch-wide gas fireplace and an 85-inch TV. Wavy ridges on the surface of the fireplace’s porcelain tiles add textural interest. Avoiding attention are the 10 speakers embedded in the wall and ceiling to provide surround sound for the entire space.
